2010 Program Update

Regina Sailing Club

Hi All:  Just a quick update on “ what's happenin'” at your sailing club in the next few weeks.  I know the weather has been horrible but the outlook for this Sunday is great at 21C – no rain and hopefully good winds!  OK - for your diary – check out http://www.sailregina.ca/Content/event.htm :

1) Sailing Clinic Sunday June 13 th .

Check Helen's notes at http://www.sailregina.ca/Content/clinics.html   Note the start time has changed from 10:00am to 11:00am to make it a little more civilized for Saturday night partiers.  This is a great chance to find out where all the equipment is kept and how to rig club boats.  Remember for the 2010 season the Club Executive has decided there is no charge for member use of club boats – BUT for liability and common sense safety purposes you need to be equivalent in skills to a fairly recent White Sails 3 level.  Come to the clinic – there are four planned over June/July –and get checked out for access to club boats.   You need a PFD and warm clothing – wet suit if you have one.  BYO food and refreshment – there are BBQ's available.  Psst!  This is a neat way for larger boat sailors to join in the fun and upgrade sailing skills - without embarrassment and then take them back to your own cruiser!

2) Membership Fees

If you haven't already attended to this – on June 15 th a late penalty fee of $50.00 kicks in.  If you've already paid your tennis and golf fees –then it's only fair you do the same for your sailing club which has probably the lowest fees going!  Remember if you have any craft or equipment at the club you must be a paid up member.

3) Annual Cruise to Rowans Ravine Provincial Park

This year as usual the sail up is your choice of Friday June 18 or Saturday 19 th returning Sunday June 20.  We have a park cabin by the marina rented and hopefully a second one for those who do not want to camp or sleep aboard.  The start on Friday is informal with boats planning to leave around 10-noon.  There is a $10.00 nuisance fee for this to encourage commitment and also cover dock fees etc.  Also, share of the cabin cost if you go that route.  The trick is to identify a skipper and offer to crew either both ways or in one direction only (there are usually cars going up and back Sunday so- travelling shouldn't be an issue).  Conversely skippers are responsible to recruit their own crews.

Likely skippers looking for crew this year include, Hellen Molloy, Steve Weild, Darrel Reimer, Doug Hilderman, myself and possibly others.  You can contact them though the email addresses above or though the last membership list sent out – which also identifies the class of boat – McGregor, San Juan , Luger etc.  Come join us – it's the longest organized sail of our year.  BBQ's are available – BYOF & BYOB – though mixin' an matchin' is usually the way to go.   There will also be at least one cruiser out of Rowans to escort the convoy the last few leagues!  For the Friday sailors, Saturday is a rest day and for local trips to explore that part of the lake.  Try this cruise – you'll love it!

4) Other stuff

a)   Pop, burgers and hot dogs and buns are available at prices listed in the fridge – but again, better to plan on bringing your own stuff.

b) Bad news at the Village boat launch.  The Village has imposed a “non resident” tarrif of $50.00 per season (or $10.00 per day) to the regular unchanged price of $35.00 per season (or $5.00 per day) for residents.  This means $85.00 per season or $15.00 per day for most of us!  According to the Village office the non resident fee is viewed as a deterent fee to reduce traffic and noise around the ramp. It might work!!

c) Susan reports the Sailing School July 19-23 rd  is pretty much fully booked – maybe there will be a cancellation for one or two for your friends?

d) We have a new tractor to cut grass – 46” deck hydrostaic drive 24 HP Ariens to relace the old Case tractor at 8 HP - if all the horses were awake at the same time.  It's a little different to drive so maybe you need checked out on it before you try.  There will be an instruction sheet in the garage and some notes attached to the tractor.

e) Take a look at our website at www.sailregina.ca and see all the good work Steve has put in to bring it up to date and a place to go for info – such as this newssheet.  It is still a work in progress but you will notice one new feature which is a Crew List for people to sign up for if you wish to crew on other members boats.  Skippers will be able to contact anyone listed to see if they want to go out on a particular day.  Steve is also working on a blog approach to make this more interactive and work in real time.

f) Your club executive has been meeting every Tuesday evening since mid March to be more pro-active in managing the club's activites.  I think we have come a long way on a number of issues – we will be putting the meeting minutes on the website soon.  Feel free to let any Director know your views on any club topic.
